Why Summer Still Needs a Bedtime: A Wellness Perspective for Parents”

Summer often brings a beautiful shift in our daily rhythm—less homework, longer days, and more freedom to explore. But even in the midst of all the fun, one routine should remain sacred: a consistent bedtime for our children.


At Live Well Coaching, we believe wellness isn’t just about eating right or exercising—it’s about creating rhythms that support the full development of our children: body, mind, and spirit.


“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

That “training” includes everything from teaching our children kindness and faith, to instilling practical habits that will serve them for life—like consistent rest.


Why Sleep Still Matters in Summer:


  • Sleep is Strength. Growing bodies and brains need 9–11 hours of rest. A consistent bedtime helps with focus, behavior, and emotional regulation—even when school’s out.

  • Routine Builds Resilience. Children thrive in structure. A predictable bedtime provides a sense of security, helping them feel grounded no matter how spontaneous the day has been.

  • Eases the Back-to-School Transition. Kids who maintain their sleep rhythm over the summer experience less anxiety and fatigue when school resumes.


The goal isn’t strictness—it’s support. You can still enjoy evening ice cream runs or movie nights. But when kids know what to expect at the end of the day, they feel more confident, calm, and connected.


As Fred Rogers wisely said,

“Children feel safer when they know what’s going to happen.”


And as Jim Rohn reminded us,

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”
